When volunteers began restoring the USS Hornet, strange noises were easy to dismiss. It was an enormous old aircraft carrier filled with metal, pipes, hatches, and machinery that could make sounds travel through several decks.
But some experiences were harder to explain.
One volunteer working alone late at night began hearing what sounded like an entire maintenance crew beneath him—men talking about aircraft, dropping tools, and carrying on ordinary conversations as though the ship were still active. Other witnesses later reported seeing sailors and officers moving through passageways, climbing ladders, or disappearing around corners.
What made those encounters so unsettling wasn’t that the figures looked frightening. It was that they looked completely normal. For a few seconds, they seemed exactly where they belonged.
And then someone would try to follow them.
